Malat
Family tradition The name Malat is inseparably united with a fair share of Austrian wine history. Since 2008 DI Michael Malat manages the estate. His father, Gerald Malat, has taken over in 1974 and, showing a great deal of pioneer spirit, expanded it to a leading winery with an area of 50 hectares.
The winery lies next to Krems, a region characterized by its favourable micro-climate. Excellent vineyards are exclusively managed by hand.
“It could very well be that our winery is the only one of this size which processes 100 percent estate-grown grape material. No purchase of grapes! We believe in manual harvesting, gentle pressing, slow fermentation and sensitive vinification. Meticulous cellar management guarantees that the top-quality of the grape material continues on to the bottling of the wine.”
Besides the primary rock and loess soils which are typical for the Krems Valley and Wachau (and excellently suited to grow white grape varieties), the Malat estate also includes gravel and loam soils. The region between the southern shores of the Danube and the Göttweiger Berg may thus be described as “red wine island”.
