Blaufränkisch IMPERIAL matures for a minimum of 18 months in new French barrique. Fine and full-bodied with undertones of blackberry, discreet cassis, woody tones on the nose. Velvety and elegant on the palate and with a pleasant sweetness and a delicate roasted aroma on the finish. A well rounded wine with considerable depth. Complex and fruity with good aging potential.
Blaufrankisch arrived in Austria at the end of the 10th century and is now Austria’s second widely planted red wine varietal. It thrives in the deep, loamy soils of Mittelburgenland. Just as with Zweigelt, the key to high quality Blaufränkisch is yield limitation. Illa Szemes owns vineyards in Horitschon, the “Pomerol” of Austria where the soil is heavy and the summers hot to ensure fully ripe grapes.
