Marchesi Alfieri

Vineyards and wines since 1696

Over the last 300 years, the ALFIERI FAMILY has been instrumental in building Piedmont’s historical, cultural and winemaking heritage. They have preserved the historic cellars where wines of great elegance are produced, true icons of the San Martino Alferi terroir. In a timeless castle, a family lives today which respects its past without losing sight of the future.

It was 1990 when 3 sisters, Giovanna, Antonella, and Emanuela San Martino di San Germano took over the winery following the death of their father and finding themselves in front of their first 10,000 bottles, all three sisters wondered the same thing: “And now who will drink them all?” Thus begins the adventure of the Marchesi Alfieri.

Terre Alfieri, where Roero, Langhe and Monferrato converge

From the castle the view is magnificent: with hills and mountains in every direction and a valley that is tinted with green from the forest and blue from the Tanaro. This is the river that marks one of the natural boundaries that define the area at the point where Roero, Langhe and Monferrato converge: we are in the Terre Alfieri. The varied composition of the soil tells us that we are in a land of various borders, capable of expressing the best of the neighboring regions in the wines: the intense aroma and floral notes of Roero; the ample fruit and freshness of Monferrato, the elegance, power and longevity of the Langhe.

Viticulture and Polyculture

Balance and subtraction, our “low intervention” viticulture. We practice a viticulture of balance and subtraction. “Balance” means guiding nature in a direction in which it can best express itself.

Working by “subtraction” (“less is more”) allows us to concentrate on the quality of bunches, making our selection directly in the vineyard.

Polyculture, the future is not invented, it is created. Protecting the landscape and biodiversity is our firm commitment. Since the 1990s, large uncultivated or abandoned plots have been reforested with oaks, cherry trees, hornbeams and 4 hectares of hazelnut trees, which comprise the “green lungs” of the property.
